Players at January’s Australian Open (AO) will be vying for unprecedented rewards with organisers pledging a $10 million increase in the total prize pool – now set at $86.5 million. The male and female title winners will each claim impressive payouts of $3.15 million, while losers as far down as qualifiers will benefit from impressive pay increases. Those crashing in round one can expect a 13 percent rise, to $120,000, while players failing later stages will enjoy a similar growth to $180,000. To kickstart the first Grand Slam of the year, losing contenders in the qualifying stage will even score $31,250 in payouts.
tournament Director Craig Tiley highlighted investing in the players, promised to ensure Australian Open remains the “launching pad for the global tennis season,” as well as providing them with “everything needed for success throughout the year.” In the last decade, tournament rewards have been doubled, realised in some of the largest increasing in sports.
