India’s Landslide Disaster – Hopes Fade
Hopes have faded for the dozens still missing after a landslide claimed the lives of many in India’s Raigad district this week. Heavy rains inundated the hilly, forested boulder-strewn region, making the search and rescue effort a herculean task. Yet the authorities and emergency personnel have faced the challenge head-on, deploying high tech equipment and leveraging expertise of all kinds.
Laxmi Kaluram Gavand stated that her entire family had been wiped out – 10 members gone with no survivors. Meanwhile, Mangesh Bhagya Bohar’s brother spoke of his despair as they are yet to identify where his home was among the 15 which were swept away.
India is no stranger to monsoon-induced destruction, with flooding and landslides annually claiming lives. Unfortunately, worsened by deforestation and urbanisation, experts believe that climate change is amplifying how extreme weather impacts our world, moving us further from the balance we cherish.
