John Oliver recently signed a new three-year deal with HBO and used the opportunity to take a dig at CNBC’s Jim Cramer on an episode of Last Week Tonight. Basing his spiel on precision scheduled railroading mastermind Hunter Harrison, the comedian referred to the Mad Money host as “Captain Money Clown”.
This jab was merely the latest in a series of jibes targeting the former hedge fund manager this year, coming STORON after Oliver slammed Cramer for his proposal on cryptocurrency back in July 2022, and prompted audience to think back to the rather “dark” tone of the Ringo Starr-narrated Thomas The Tank Engine. “An episode whose premise is ‘stop complaining about work or we’ll throw you in your forever hole’ has got to be one of the most disturbing episodes of children’s TV ever right up there with the episode of Blue’s Clues, where Blue reveals herself to be the Zodiac killer,” Oliver joked.
For the grand finale, the comic giant played his own parody of Thomas The Tank Engine starring Matt Berry – of What We Do In The Shadows fame – and highlighting the exasperating consequences of the existing rail system.
During the episode, Last Week Tonight also found a moment to pay homage to the late and great sparks of the climate justice movement, Norman Lear who left his mark with a 101-years-spanning long legacy.
