French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation at the 2014 New Year’s Eve celebrations in the gardens of the Elysée Palace, ringing in hope with the flags of the Olympic nations as his backdrop. Macron encouraged a civic and economic “rearmament” for France, encouraging the citizens to make a decisive choice in the upcoming European elections. This June, Macron requests that voters “choose between continuing Europe or blocking it” in light of the legacy left behind by the late European Union leader, Jacques Delors.
2018 has been a difficult year with Macron’s government and its implementation of the deeply unpopular pension reform and rioting due to the police killing of numerous citizens among the struggles. From immigration bills supported by the far right to Macron’s remarks supporting Gerard Depardieu, who is now charged with rape and multiple sexual assault allegations, tension and controversy has abounded. Most recently, Macron has launched a plea to move towards a more lasting ceasefire in Gaza amongst Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
