Moldovan President Maia Sandu on Sunday said she would like to seek a second term for her presidency in 2024, reinforcing her commitment to push for the former Soviet Republic’s entrance into the European Union. A quote from President Sandu: “We still have important steps to take and I promise to continue if you give me your confidence for a new term in 2024,” Ms. Sandu posted on her Facebook account.

Earlier this month, NATO and European Union leaders agreed to open negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova in order to discuss EU service membership. According to polls, President Sandu is the leading candidate ahead of the presidential vote which would take place by late 2024 with some 30 percent of the vote. Studies also show another notable presidential candidate is Russia supporting Igor Dodon with a 24 percent percentage.

President Sandu has taken a pro-EU stance while her government condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This agreement also pushes forth Moldova’s ambitions of holding a referendum on EU membership in the upcoming autumn.
