NASA Spots New Moon Crater, Likely Caused By Crashed Russian Probe By AFP News 09/01/23 AT 11:15 AM EDT
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spotted a small new crater on the Moon that is the probable impact point of Russia’s Luna-25 probe AFP.
NASA has discovered a sizable new crater on the Moon that is almost certainly a result of a failed Russian lunar mission that impacted the nearby lunar surface around two weeks ago. The discovery was observed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) by contrasting before and after images, thanks to Russian space agency Roscosmos.
Russia’s Luna-25 failed to carry out a manoeuvering mission shot on Aug 19, quelling Russia’s quest to revive its lunar program which was thought to be the first soft landing at the lunar south pole. Although the dream wasn’t viable, India met this ambition succeeding in responsible landing its Chandrayaan-3 mission on the 23rd of August. LRO which has been functioning through its matching orbiting maneuvers since 2009 produced a “before” image taken in the month of June during 2022 and was compared to the after impact photo taken on August 24th during 2023.
NASA detailed a statement concerning “Since the new crater is close to the Luna 25 predicted impact location the LRO conclused that it ultimately emerges as the conductor of the mission instead of a pure natural impacting-marker.”
The developed crater is about 10 meters in diameter, infinitesimally measured amidst the seemingly astronomical number of 400 Kilometers which is only a fraction of thetargeted landing point designated by the Luna-25 mission.
