Lawmakers in the House of Lords believe that changes to the United Kingdom Online Safety Bill need to consider any and all activities taking place in the metaverse. On July 12th, high-ranking members of the UK Parliament debated the implications of “certain harmful content” for the Bill, including those found in the metaverse. Illora Finlay, a parliamentarian from Wales, raised the issue of protecting users from “ghastly stuff” found in such services.
Stephen Parkinson of England then proposed including not just photographs and text, but also avatars and virtual things in the scope of the professional protections provided by the Bill. On July 17th, members of the House of Lords are due to meet once more to review the Bill.
Once the necessary readings and approval are given by the House of Representatives, the United Kingdom Online Safety Bill can be turned into law and changes can be instituted in the text.
