UN Chief Calls For ‘United, Sustained, Global’ Strategy For AI

By AFP News 11/02/23 AT 1:28 PM EDT

UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres called on Thursday for a “united, sustained, global” strategy to facing challenges posed by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). He proposed for establishing a resolution to mitigate those risks, based on the bounds of the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Other esteemed political leaders were in attendance at the Bletchley Park conference, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US Vice President Kamala Harris and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen.

UN chief Guterres reportedly urged lawmakers and regulators to stay one step ahead with manipulating this advanced technology, rather than playing catch-up. If not, humans may risk losing power over AI, risking information integrity and increasing potential use by criminals. Therefore “new solutions” are necessary to bridging the gap between AI and its governance. Guterres also requested the equal collaboration of world leaders implement this technology globally, rather than deepen the already existing global divides.

“We need a united, sustained, global strategy, based on multilateralism and the participation of all stakeholders,” he said. “The United Nations is ready to play its part.”
