US Imposes Sanctions on Head of Belarus Red Cross For Links to Deportation Ukrainian Children to Russia
The US announced sanctions Tuesday against the head of the Belarus Red Cross, accusing him of being complicit in the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.
Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has been accused of forcibly deporting thousands of Ukrainian children — with Belarus’s support — from hospitals, schools and orphanages in the country’s Russia-controlled areas.
The Treasury Department proclaimed that Dmitry Shautsou was targeted: for assisting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, who had planned the deportation. Lvova-Belova is wanted by the International Criminal Court for the “war crime” of Mr Shautsou’s supposed roles in meditating illegal transfers.
